This tutorial will give you the basics to upload images WordPress Media uploader. These instructions are slightly different from adding images to a post or page you are creating.
Login to your WordPress backend at http://yourwebsite.com/wp-admin
You’ll see a list of different sections of your site in the far left column. You will want to mouse over Media. When the sub menu flies out, click on ‘Add New’.
This will open the WordPress Media section. Uploading images or other media files is simple using the new uploader. Just drag the image file from its folder on your computer – not an opened file. In other words, don’t open the image first and try to drag it – that won’t work. Instead, go to the folder containing the image file, and drag the image from there.
You can also use the ‘Select Files’ button if you aren’t comfortable with dragging files or images.
You will be able to see the progress as WordPress uploads your image. Once the image is uploaded, you will see something like this:
What if I want to upload multiple images at once to WordPress Media?
The image uploader in WordPress Media will allow you to drag multiple files into it at once – no need to wait for each image to load. Once you’ve uploaded all images you see a list like this:
First, notice that the images are listed by the image name. When you are first building your site, it is worth taking the time to rename your images so that you know what they are about. Those thumbnails are really tiny and hard to see. Plus, you can later search the Media files to find images by name (or upload date). So rename them something relevant to the post you are writing or the image itself. You can rename your images in the image Editor, as you’ll see below.
How to Edit the Image Information
If you click on the ‘Edit’ link, the image file will open like this:
This screen is where you can copy the URL if you need it.
The ALT section is highlighted because that is where you tell the search engines what this image is – it’s great for SEO to have an Alt tag (Alt means ‘alternative text’- they cannot see images – yet!) You can rename your images here, also. Or add a caption. Captions can be a nice addition – your theme may add a little lightweight frame as well.
Be sure to click Update when you are editing – the Media Uploader will not give you a ‘Are you sure you want to leave this page?’ message before you exit.
